5 Ways to Support Your Favorite Authors Without Spending Money
Authors thrive on their readers' support.
After all, without strong readerships and good sales, it's nearly impossible to maintain a writing career. As readers, our favorite authors' success is in OUR hands, which is exactly why it's so important that we support the authors we love.
The easiest way to support an author is, of course, to buy their books. But what if we don't have a lot of money to spend or if we prefer not to buy every book we read?
Fortunately, we can use more than just our cash to support our favorite authors. In today's video, I'm sharing 5 ways we can support authors without spending a dime. Check out the video below or over on Youtube!

"Hello, lovely writers and readers of the internet!
I'm Kristen, and welcome back to my channel. Today, I am so excited to talk about 5 different ways you can support authors without spending any money.
As you may or may not know, I really don't spend a lot of money on books. I read a lot of books from my library, and then I only tend to purchase the books I love the most to keep on my bookshelf back there.
But obviously, as both a reader and a writer myself, supporting authors is a huge deal to me. The amount of time and work and creativity and energy that goes into crafting a book is insane.
Authors deserve to get paid, and it takes a lot of support for authors to keep their careers rolling. But, unfortunately for people like me and maybe yourself as well, we don't have a lot of spending money to drop on books whenever we feel like it.
Or perhaps you're also like me in the sense that I like to have a pretty minimalistic lifestyle. I don't like to surround myself with a bunch of things, and most of the time that includes books, too.
So how can we support authors without spending a ton of money? Well, let's get into that today!
Trick #1: Use your library.
The first way you can support your favorite authors is to use your library. Check out their books and encourage others to do the same.
Generally speaking, the more checkouts an author has at a local library, the more likely it is that that library will continue to stock their books in the future, allowing more people to read their books and allowing that author's reach to spread.
Also, if you're favorite authors' books aren't already at your library, don't be afraid to go ask your librarian to stock those books. Let them know that you're very interested in those books and that you think others will be as well, and encourage them to stock the library with your favorite authors' books.
Trick #2: Talk about books online and in person.
The second way that you can support authors without spending money is to share that author and their books with, like, everyone you know---in real life and online.
An author's greatest marketing tool is their readers, so be a super fan. That is how your favorite author's renown grows, that's how their books get into the hands of more and more readers.
So both online in the reading and writing communities and in person---perhaps at your local library or among your bookworm friends---share that authors' work. Build awareness and encourage others to go out and read books, too.
You can also help build hype online by pinning fan-art from your favorite authors' books, by sharing quotes from those books on your Facebook and on Twitter, even by writing your very own fan-fiction.
Just keep talking. That is how word about authors' books spread.
Trick #3: Rate and review books online.
The third way you can support your favorite authors without spending any money is to rate and review their books online. Ratings and review are huge!
Online marketplaces like Amazon and Barnes & Noble run on algorithms, which basically means that the more readers seem to be buying and enjoying an authors' books, the more likely it is that those books are going to show up high in searches on those sites, giving those books and their authors more visibility and increasing the chances that more readers will continue to buy them.
Those algorithms take into account how many ratings and reviews a book has and how positive those ratings and reviews are.
And even though you're just one person, every single rating and review adds up. You don't even have to write a full-out book review, like a three page paper. Just a few small lines can be so, so helpful.
Leaving ratings and reviews for the books that you've read on Amazon and Goodreads only takes 5 to 10 minutes, and I think oftentimes we as readers really don't do it enough. I know I don't.
So, I'm going to make more of an effort in the future to leave ratings and reviews for the books that I read, and I hope that you will do the same.
Trick #4: Share the love with your favorite authors.
The fourth way you can support your favorite authors without spending money is to contact them, and I don't mean this in any sort of creepy stalker way.
But when you love an author or you love their books, don't be afraid to reach out and share your excitement. Whether that be on social media or through an email or through a letter if they happen to have a PO box listed online.
Let your favorite authors know how much you love them. Doing so not only lifts their spirits and encourages them to keep on writing, but it also gives those authors something that they can share on social media.
As you may or may not know, authors have to do a lot of their own promotion, and self-promotion can feel pretty icky for a lot of people.
Your favorite authors might not feel comfortable tweeting about their own books, but they'll probably be far more likely and more willing and excited to retweet or reshare something that you've sent them.
Also, don't be afraid to go to book events or book conventions, signings and readings, if any happen to be in your area--even if you're a little bit terrified of social situations like I am.
Getting to meet your favorite authors, or at least hear them speak, is so, so exciting. And again, you can post about these things on social media and tell your friends and family what you've done and help raise awareness for this author and their books.
Trick #5: Encourage reading in your community.
And finally, the fifth way that you can support your favorite authors without spending any money is to encourage literacy and reading in your local communities.
Let's face it: we bookish people sometimes get a bad rep. We're seen as anti-social or uncool or other silly stereotypes like that, right?
But, of course, we bookworms know that those stereotypes ARE silly, and it's our job to push past those stereotypes and encourage others to read, too. Especially young kids, but also our peers.
It's likely that your community or a nearby community has programs that encourage literacy and reading. I encourage you, if you have the time, to get involved.
Get involved in book clubs or programs that encourage young kids to read. You can even start a book club of your own! Maybe in your personal life. But also, if you're a student, don't be afraid to start a book club at your school.
Book clubs don't have to be reserved just for the latest literary novels. If you love sci-fi or if you love fantasy, if you love YA, start book clubs for lovers of those genres. And again, if there are any programs in your community that encourage literacy and reading among young kids, I just encourage you to get involved.
Surprisingly enough, my local library actually has a program where, once a week, young kids can come in and read to animals. Usually dogs, I believe, which I think is so cool!
Not only do they get to hang out with some puppies and get lots of cuddles and lots of pets, but it encourages them to read to the animals as well, so the animals from the local shelters get lots of loving. And I just think that is SO neat.
So I encourage you to go ahead and check out your local community's programs as well.
Spreading a love for reading is one of the very best ways that you can support your favorite authors and books. So, what are you waiting for?
Friends, thank you so much for watching today's video. I hope you enjoyed it, and I also hope you enjoyed this new background here.
I actually spent all of yesterday rearranging my bedroom because previously my bookshelf was tucked into the far corner there, between two windows, and so it made filming with good lighting really difficult.
So I rearranged my room. I put my bookshelf in front of a window, and hopefully it looks much, much better. I hope you guys like it, and if you enjoyed this video, go ahead and give it a thumbs up.
