October 2015's Featured Novel Lady: Laura Teagan, author of The Assassin
F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, "Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall." in his novel, The Great Gatsby. And that's precisely true for October's featured novel lady, Laura Teagan, as she'll soon be launching down a new path in life as a self-published author!
It's my pleasure to feature Laura on the blog this month, as I am so excited to join her in celebration as her release date for The Assassin draws near. I'm also beyond honored to announce that Laura has chosen to reveal her book's cover in today's interview! How awesome is that?
If you're new to She's Novel, every month I feature one spectacular lady who is killing it in the writing world in her own unique way, someone whose passion for the craft motivates me to continue on my own writing journey. And Laura certainly does just that!
Eager to learn more about Laura's new novel, self-publishing journey, and love of Stephanie Plum books? Check out our interview below!
Welcome to She's Novel, Laura! Why don't you tell us a bit about what you write?
I’m writing a new adult mystery series. I’m sure at some point, I’ll write an adult mystery series, as well.
You have a new novel coming out soon, right?
I’m in the very, very last stage of prepping my book, The Assassin, for publication. The Assassin is a mystery about a young FBI agent, Cassie Dreandry, who ends up working with a rogue agent to capture a serial killer. Things get interesting when the serial killer begins stalking Cassie.
I’m also finishing the first draft of the sequel, Double Played.
You'll be self-publishing, right? Tell us a little bit about your self-publishing journey.
I worked for a small publishing house my freshman year of college, and it really opened my eyes to publishing. After that, I knew that self-publishing was going to be my route. There’s been plenty of ups and downs (most of the downs were of my own creation), but I’ve never doubted the decision to self-publish.
Of course, in that time, I’ve probably done everything you shouldn’t do when self-publishing. I’ve delayed my book too many times to count, and over the summer, I decided to publish under a pen name (my last name is thirteen letters long).
How did you get into writing? Have you always written or is it a new pursuit?
I really got into writing in seventh grade, when we'd would have to spend the class period writing every Friday. I started my book, The Assassin, back in eighth grade. That was eight years ago.
Since then, both the book and I have grown-up and changed, and the book was a part of the writing website, inkpop, back in 2010. Part of the story was read by a HarperCollins editor, but even all of that changed. The core plot line has always stayed the same, but as I’ve matured, almost every thing else in the story has, as well.
Nowhere better than mid-interview for a cover reveal!

Do you have a favorite piece of writing advice to offer She's Novel readers?
Don't be afraid to walk away. We get so caught up in our stories and the fact that we're writing books, but sometimes it doesn't work. If your gut is telling you to walk away (whether for a break or permanently), do so.
Now for a little fun! If you could only read one book or book series for the rest of your life, which would it be and why?
The Stephanie Plum series. There’s currently twenty-one books in the series (book number twenty-two comes out on my twenty-second birthday), and they’re a hoot. The Stephanie Plum books are cozy mysteries, so they’re funny, lighthearted, but they still have serious moments.
Before we say goodbye, why don't you tell us a bit about your online presence?
I have two personas online. All my books will be published under Laura Teagan. My two blogs, though, are written under my real name, Laura Toeniskoetter.
Ginger & Co. is a lifestyle blog for young women finishing college and launching careers. Ginger & Books is a blog for writers, specifically young women. Between my social media skills and my publishing industry background (including a soon-to-be-degree in public relations), I want to help young women set their books up for success.
Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by She's Novel today, Laura! I had so much fun chatting with you, and I'm beyond honored that you chose to reveal your cover on the blog. Best of luck as your publishing date draws near!
